Pelham 123 - Ostaggi in metropolitana (The Taking of Pelham 123) è un film del 2009 diretto da Tony Scott e sceneggiato da Brian Helgeland. Il film è il terzo adattamento cinematografico del romanzo thriller Il colpo della metropolitana scritto da Morton Freedgood, sotto lo pseudonimo di John Godey. Il primo adattamento risale al 1974, Il colpo della metropolitana (Un ostaggio al minuto), diretto da Joseph Sargent conWalter Matthau e Robert Shaw; nel 1998 ne fu invece realizzato un adattamento televisivo. Nella metropolitana di New York un gruppo di uomini prende possesso del treno Pelham 123. Prima sparano ad un agente della polizia ferroviaria che li aveva scoperti, poi staccano tutti i vagoni lasciandone solo uno, liberano gran parte dei passeggeri tenendo con sé 18 ostaggi e tolgono la corrente a tutta l'area dove si trova il treno. Walter Garber, un operatore addetto allo smistamento ferroviario, insospettito dal treno fermo, cerca di comunicare col macchinista ma non ottiene risposta. Dopo un po' viene contattato dal capo dei dirottatori che si fa chiamare Ryder il quale detta le sue condizioni: vuole 10 milioni di dollari entro 60 minuti, o per ogni minuto di ritardo ucciderà un ostaggio. Intanto del dirottamento viene informato anche il sindaco della città che decide di collaborare coi sequestratori. Ryder e Garber continuano a parlare di morte, di Dio e di perdono scoprendo che fra loro c'è una grande sintonia. Al centro di smistamento arriva il team di negoziazione ostaggi della polizia comandata dal tenente Camonetti. Il tenente fa allontanare Garber e inizia a negoziare con Ryder che non ne vuole sapere perché vuole parlare solo con Garber e per far vedere che fa sul serio uccide il macchinista del treno. Garber viene subito richiamato e torna a parlare con Ryder. I sequestratori riescono a collegarsi a una rete portatile wireless che permette loro, tramite un computer, di avere contatti col mondo esterno. Questo fa sì che un ragazzo, in possesso di un computer e di una webcam, riesca a trasmettere alla sua ragazza tutto quello che succede sul treno. Grazie a questo sistema si riesce a risalire all'identità di uno dei sequestratori, un certo Ramos che una volta lavorava per le ferrovie ma che poi è stato arrestato per aver causato un incidente sotto l'effetto di farmaci. Camonetti sospetta che Garber possa essere in combutta coi sequestratori ma le accuse si rivelano infondate. Arriva anche il sindaco che pretende di parlare con Ryder, questi gli propone di prendere il posto degli ostaggi, ma il sindaco rifiuta, allora il sequestratore lo insulta pesantemente dicendogli che neanche se lo avesse implorato in ginocchio avrebbe scambiato la vita degli ostaggi per la sua. C'è un grande dispiegamento di forze dell'ordine per garantire che i soldi arrivino in tempo, ma l'auto che trasporta il denaro ha un grave incidente. Garber cerca di temporeggiare, ma Ryder non vuole sentire ragioni: o i soldi o la vita di uno degli ostaggi. Garber mente a Ryder dicendogli che i soldi sono arrivati, ma lui smaschera la bugia in quanto è collegato con una web cam posta all'esterno della fermata della metropolitana. Per ripicca, decide quindi di uccidere uno degli ostaggi. Un cecchino della SWAT che si trova nel tunnel viene morso da un topo e spara accidentalmente un colpo contro Ramos uccidendolo, i sequestratori rispondono al fuoco ma non ci sono ulteriori vittime. Quando i soldi arrivano Ryder vuole che sia Garber a portarli nel tunnel e quest'ultimo accetta. Si scopre anche il vero nome di Ryder, si chiama Dennis Ford, ed è un ex agente di borsa di Wall Street che rubò 20 milioni di dollari dei contribuenti e venne condannato a 10 anni di carcere. A Garber, prima di andare a consegnare i soldi, viene data una pistola, nascosta nel doppio fondo di una delle borse che contengono il denaro. Ryder informa Camonetti che appena gli saranno consegnati i soldi vuole che tutti i semafori che si trovano sulla linea del treno siano verdi. Garber arriva al treno e consegna i soldi ai sequestratori e dopo essere stato perquisito viene fatto andare dal loro capo. Ryder chiede a Garber di guidare il treno e lui acconsente. Il treno parte e Camonetti fa in modo che tutti i semafori siano verdi per far passare tranquillamente il treno. A metà corsa Ryder fa fermare il treno, quest'ultimo scende insieme ai sequestratori, che prima di andarsene manomettono il sistema di guida per far sì che la polizia creda che loro sono ancora sul treno, in questo modo possono andarsene indisturbati. Tutte le vie di fuga dalla metropolitana sono controllate perciò Ryder si fa portare da Garber ad una vecchia stazione della metropolitana che tramite un montacarichi porta in superficie. Sfruttando un attimo di distrazione dei sequestratori Garber riesce a prendere la pistola dalla borsa e scappa, gli uomini di Ryder gli sparano addosso ma decidono di lasciarlo andare perché ormai sono arrivati alla vecchia stazione. Il piano di Ryder funziona alla perfezione, infatti i poliziotti credono ancora che i sequestratori siano sul treno che seguono, malgrado Camonetti si sia insospettito per la fermata che il treno ha fatto a metà corsa, ma dal centro di smistamento lo tranquillizzano dicendogli che è impossibile che il treno continui a correre senza nessuno ai comandi. Garber cerca di mettersi in contatto con la superficie ma senza successo e allora decide di seguire i malviventi. Arriva la conferma che non c'è nessuno ai comandi del treno, allora Camonetti controlla se ci sono uscite d'emergenza nel luogo dove si è fermato il treno e scopre che c'è una vecchia stazione abbandonata e che l'uscita porta ad un hotel di lusso. Scoperto questo, il tenente manda le forze speciali sul posto. Il treno viene fatto fermare coi freni d'emergenza. Ryder e i suoi uomini arrivati all'hotel si dividono. Ryder prende un taxi, mentre i due complici fermati dalla polizia estraggono le armi e vengono uccisi all'istante. Garber, che intanto è riuscito a risalire in superficie, vede Ryder salire sul taxi e decide di seguirlo. Garber prende un'auto e avverte, tramite un cellulare, le autorità che Ryder sta andando verso il Manhattan Bridge. La polizia chiude il ponte e inizia a perquisire le auto che si trovano sul posto. Anche Garber scende dal suo veicolo. Dopo un po' vede il taxi dove si trovava Ryder ma lui non c'è più. Ryder si trova sul lato pedonale del ponte e sta andando via coi soldi, ma Garber lo vede e gli punta l'arma contro intimandogli di fermarsi. Garber richiama l'attenzione dei poliziotti, ma Ryder non vuole più tornare in galera e chiede a Garber di ucciderlo, perché dice che lui sia l'unica persona al mondo che gli vuole bene. Garber non vuole farlo ma il criminale gli dice che se non lo farà gli sparerà e inizia un conto alla rovescia. Quando Ryder sta per estrarre l'arma Garber gli spara. Ryder, contento, gli dice:"Sei il mio eroe, Garber..." e si accascia a terra morto. Il sindaco si congratula con Garber per il meraviglioso lavoro svolto durante il giorno e aggiunge anche che riavrà il suo vecchio posto di lavoro. Le ultime immagini ci mostrano Garber che torna a casa come un uomo normale dalla sua famiglia.

It is a film adaptation of the novel by Morton Freedgood (writing under the pseudonym John Godey), and is a remake of the original 1974 film adaptation, which was also remade in 1998 as a TV film. Production began in March 2008, and it was released on June 12, 2009.[4]
A man calling himself Ryder hijacks Pelham 123, a New York City Subway6train that departed fromPelham Bay Parkstation at 1:23 p.m. Ryder is accompanied by three other heavily armed men; Bashkim, Emri, and former train operator Phil Ramos. They uncouple the front car from the rest of the train and take the passengers hostage.MTAemployee Walter Garber is working the Rail Control Center as a train dispatcher and receives a ransom call from Ryder, who demands $10 million in cash be paid within 60 minutes. Ryder warns that every minute past the deadline they force him to wait, he will execute a hostage.
Bashkim kills a plainclothes Transit Police officer who attempts to arrest him. He and Ramos then allow all the passengers not in the front car to be released except for the motorman. Garber reluctantly negotiates with Ryder and develops a rapport, while Ramos and Emri set up internet access in the tunnel. Ryder uses his laptop to watch the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunge nearly 1,000 points during the next hour in response to the taking. One of the passenger's laptops also connects to the internet, and the computer's webcam is activated. The webcam allows the people in the control center to monitor the train, which they use to observe Ryder and Ramos. Lieutenant Camonetti of the NYPD Emergency Service Unit enters the RCC to take over negotiations and Garber is ordered to leave the premises. The change infuriates Ryder, who shoots and kills the train's motorman in order to force Camonetti to bring Garber back. Camonetti learns that Garber is being investigated for allegedly accepting a $35,000 bribe over a contract for new subway cars. Ryder also discovers the allegations through online news reports and forces Garber to confess by threatening to kill a passenger. Garber explains why he took the bribe and tells Ryder that he used the money to pay for his child's college tuition. Ryder expresses his admiration for Garber's willingness to risk himself to save a stranger. Meanwhile, the Mayor agrees to deliver the ransom money to Ryder and orders the NYPD to deliver it. On the way to the delivery point, the police are involved in an accident and fail to get the money there in time. Garber attempts to bluff Ryder by telling him the money has been dropped off, unaware that Ryder has been monitoring events on his laptop and knows he's being lied to. An enraged Ryder threatens to execute one of the children hostages and the child's mother. Another hostage, a former soldier, sacrifices himself to save the mother and child and is killed. A short gunfight erupts after an NYPD sniper is bitten by a rat and accidentally discharges his weapon, killing Ramos. Based on clues that Garber receives during his conversations with Ryder, the NYPD discover that Ryder's real name is Dennis Ford. He was a manager at a private equity firm before being sentenced to prison forinvestment fraud. Ford had agreed to a plea bargain for a three year sentence, but was instead sentenced to ten years by the judge. One of the Mayor's aides mentions the extreme drop in the major stock indexes in response to the train hijacking, and the Mayor deduces that Ryder is actually attempting to manipulate the market via put options. Ryder demands that Garber himself deliver the ransom money, and Garber is given a pistol and flown to the terminal to make the drop. Ryder brings Garber aboard and orders him to operate the train to the next station, where he and the hijackers exit the train during a brief stop. Ryder then uses a device to rig the train to go on without them. Garber manages to separate himself from Ryder at a railway crossing and then follows him as he escapes to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. Ryder parts from Bashkim and Emri, who are later shot dead after being surrounded by police. The train comes to a halt safely, and police learn that Ryder is no longer on board. Ryder hails a taxi while Garber follows him in a truck. Ryder checks his laptop and finds that his scheme has amassed a $307 million profit. He leaves the cab on the Manhattan Bridge and takes the bridge's pedestrian walkway but Garber catches up to him. Garber holds Ryder at gunpoint, and Ryder gives him a 10 second ultimatum to pull the trigger. In the final seconds of the countdown, Ryder pulls out his gun and forces Garber to shoot him. As he lies dying, Ryder tells Garber that he considers him a hero. Afterward, the mayor thanks Garber for saving the hostages and reassures him about his bribery charges. The film concludes with Garber walking into his home carrying a bag of groceries, including a half-gallon of milk he promised his wife, Theresa, he'd bring home earlier in the film.
