The Avengers è un film del 2012, prodotto dai Marvel Studios e distribuito dalla Walt Disney Pictures, basato sul supergruppo dei Vendicatori, composto dai supereroi dei fumetti Marvel Comics. Il film è sceneggiato e diretto da Joss Whedon[1] e dispone di un cast che include Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg, Cobie Smulders, Scarlett Johansson, Stellan Skarsgård e Samuel L. Jackson. In The Avengers, Nick Fury, direttore dello S.H.I.E.L.D., recluta Iron Man, Capitan America, Hulk, Thor, Vedova Nera eOcchio di Falco per formare una squadra per fermare Loki, il perfido fratello di Thor, che vuole conquistare la Terracon il suo esercito alieno. È il sesto film del Marvel Cinematic Universe. Già nel 2005 i Marvel Studios avevano intenzione di produrre The Avengers, ma solo dopo il successo di Iron Man la casa di produzione dette il via al progetto. Inizialmente previsto per il luglio 2011, l'uscita del film venne successivamente spostata al 2012.[2] La produzione è iniziata nel mese di aprile 2011 ad Albuquerque, Nuovo Messico,[3] prima di trasferirsi a Cleveland, Ohio, nel mese di agosto[4] e a New York City nel mese di settembre.[5] Il film è stato convertito in 3D in post-produzione. The Avengers ha debuttato l'11 aprile 2012[2], all'El Capitan Theatre di Hollywood, California. Il film ha generalmente ricevuto recensioni positive da parte della critica cinematografica ed ha battuto diversi record al botteghino, tra cui il record come miglior esordio in Nord America, record precedentemente detenuto da Harry Potter e i Doni della Morte - Parte 2.[6] Con un incasso globale di oltre un miliardo e mezzo di dollari, The Avengers è il terzo maggiore incasso della storia del cinema.[7] Oltre che all'enorme successo ottenuto, il film fu candidato agli Oscar 2013 come migliori effetti speciali. Il Tesseract è un Cubo Cosmico di origine asgardiana, uno dei gioielli di Odino, e un "Antico dell'universo" e il suo portavoce incappucciato The Other intendono appropriarsene. Loki, che intende conquistare la Terra e sottomettere il genere umano, stringe un accordo con i due alieni. Il colonnello Nick Fury, direttore dello S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement & Logistic Division), raggiunge un complesso dove sono situati alcuni laboratori sperimentali. Qui il dottor Erik Selvig sta effettuando dei test sul Tesseract, recuperato da Howard Stark negli anni cinquanta nell'Oceano Atlantico settentrionale insieme a Capitan America. Improvvisamente il Tesseract, che già aveva manifestato delle anomalie, apre un varco dimensionale nella stanza ed appare Loki, che impugna uno strano scettro. Alla richiesta di Nick Fury di deporre l'arma, Loki uccide da solo gran parte degli agenti presenti e compie un incantesimo sul dr. Selvig e su Occhio di Falco (l'agente Clint Barton). Poi il dio fugge impadronendosi del Tesseract: a nulla valgono i tentativi del colonnello Fury e dell'agente Maria Hill di recuperare il cubo cosmico. Essendo un allarme di livello 7, Nick Fury mette in atto le contromosse ed invia gli agenti Coulson e Romanoff a localizzare un gruppo di persone già note alle cartelle dello S.H.I.E.L.D., con l'intento di creare una squadra d'azione speciale. Il progetto è chiamato Vendicatori. Steve Rogers (Capitan America), Bruce Banner (Hulk) e Tony Stark (Iron Man) si incontrano sull'Helicarrier, un enorme portaerei dotata di una tecnologia sofisticata in grado di alzarla in volo dall'oceano e di mimetizzarla rendendola invisibile (è questo, l'Helicarrier, il quartier generale dello S.H.I.E.L.D.). Intanto Loki manifesta le sue intenzioni: vuole iniziare una guerra, con l'esercito dei Chitauri a suo seguito, mentre deve inoltre recuperare il Tesseract per colui che gli ha fornito l'esercito e le armi, altrimenti quest'ultimo sperimenterà una nuova forma di dolore sull'asgardiano. Per comunicare sulla Terra, questo misterioso individuo usa The Other come portavoce, che si mette in contatto con Loki tramite lo scettro. Il dio viene in poco tempo individuato dallo S.H.I.E.L.D. a Stoccarda e, dopo un breve scontro con Iron Man e Capitan America, riescono a catturarlo. Tuttavia durante il ritorno alla base, Thor giunge sul Quinjet dello S.H.I.E.L.D. dove stanno volando i supereroi e requisisce con la forza Loki. Thor intende portarlo con sé e sottoporlo al giudizio di Asgard ma Iron Man, deciso a recuperare il prigioniero, interrompe bruscamente il dibattito tra le due divinità. Lo scontro fra i due sembra ben lontano dalla conclusione, in quanto Thor è più forte, ma i suoi fulmini non fanno altro che potenziare l'armatura di Tony Stark. L'intervento di Capitan America riesce a placare gli animi e a convincere Thor a collaborare con lo S.H.I.E.L.D.. Tornati sull'Helicarrrier, si manifestano litigi ed incomprensioni e sorgono le prime perplessità sulla coesione del gruppo. La presenza di Hulk rende inoltre tutti un po' irrequieti, ma il dottor Banner sembra aver sviluppato un notevole autocontrollo sulla rabbia che in lui scatena la trasformazione nel mostro. Vi è anche un clima di diffidenza verso le reali intenzioni dello S.H.I.E.L.D.: vengono scoperti eroi prototipi e progetti di armi di distruzione di massa. Nick Furyrivela al gruppo che da quando è stata scoperta l'esistenza di altri mondi, dalla prima venuta di Thor, lo S.H.I.E.L.D. ha iniziato ad utilizzare il Tesseract per attuare un serio e pesante potenziamento militare, allo scopo di farsi trovare pronti ed evoluti in un possibile scontro con civiltà sconosciute. Durante questo momento di distrazione, Clint Barton ed altri agenti che hanno subito l'incantesimo di Loki assaltano l'Helicarrier per liberare il dio dalla sua prigione. Nella confusione in seguito ad un'esplosione, Bruce Banner inizia a perdere il suo autocontrollo. A nulla valgono i tentativi di Natasha Romanoff di placare il dottor Banner che, dunque, si trasforma in Hulk e con una rabbia incontrollabile si scaglia contro la Vedova Nera. Solo l'intervento di Thor salva la donna. Dopo un'equa colluttazione tra i due, Hulk precipita dalla base volante mentre tentava di distruggere un cacciabombardiere che lo aveva attaccato.Iron Man e Capitan America tentano insieme di far ripartire i motori dell'Helicarrer, distrutti dai soldati di Loki ma nel frattempo il dio, liberato dai suoi uomini, espelle dalla nave Thor, uccide l'Agente S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson e fugge nuovamente. Intanto, a causa di una forte botta in testa da parte di Natasha, l'agente Clint Barton rinviene dall'incantesimo di Loki. La morte dell'agente Coulson, amico di Tony Stark e di Thor e grande ammiratore di Capitan America, crea coesione tra gli eroi e dà loro una giusta motivazione per combattere insieme il nemico comune. Stark capisce che il piano di Loki prevedeva farsi arrestare e scatenare Hulk. Intuisce inoltre che l'asgardiano vuole portare a termine il suo piano di guerra in modo plateale, così che tutti lo possano ammirare. Il punto scelto per installare il Tessaract ed aprire un ponte spaziale non può che essere che il più alto della città di New York, ovvero la Stark Tower. Giunto sul posto, Iron Man incontra Loki e il dr. Selvig sul tetto della Stark Tower. Qui si libera dell'armatura danneggiata e colloquia amichevolmente con Loki per distrarlo mentre indossa un paio di bracciali che comandano a distanza la nuova armatura di Iron Man, denominata "Mark 7". Loki punta sul petto di Stark lo scettro per praticare un incantesimo ma, fallendo nel tentativo, scaglia il miliardario giù dalla torre. Ma la nuova armatura "Mark 7" viene chiamata da Tony, che viene raggiunto e rivestito dell'armatura in volo. Intanto il portale spaziale generato dal Tesseract si apre in cielo ed escono i Chitauri, che assalgono New York City. Iron Man ne uccide il possibile, tuttavia un solo supereroe non basta. In città arrivano uno ad uno tutti i supereroi del progetto Vendicatori, compreso Banner, che rivela di riuscire a controllare la sua trasformazione e a riconoscere gli eroi alleati e non. Thor raggiunge Loki e prova a farlo ragionare ma questi, esitante, ferisce il fratellastro e fugge. Benché i Vendicatori stiano avendo la meglio sugli invasori Chitauri, finché il portale spaziale rimarrà aperto i rinforzi alieni continuano ad affluire. Hulk raggiunge Loki e, nonostante gli altezzosi proclami dell'asgardiano, lo sconfigge con irrisoria facilità. Il dottor Selvig, intanto, si è ripreso dall'incantesimo di Loki e lavora alla chiusura del portale con Natasha Romanoff. Ma nel frattempo, il governo ha deciso di inviare un missile nucleare sull'isola di Manhattan per distruggere i nemici insieme alla popolazione residente: Iron Man, in un atto di estremo sacrificio, usa tutte le forze per deviare il missile verso il portale e lo attraversa, colpendo la nave madre dei Chitauri. Stark si trova nello spazio e sviene non riuscendo a respirare, ma fortunatamente spinto dall'onda d'urto dell'esplosione, oltrepassa nuovamente il portale prima che si chiuda definitivamente, tornando così sulla Terra. Nel precipitare, viene salvato da Hulk. Intanto tutti i Chitauri sulla Terra muoiono in seguito all'esplosione della nave madre. Cessata la minaccia, Thor torna ad Asgard con il Tesseract e Loki prigioniero, mentre gli altri Vendicatori riprendono le rispettive strade. In caso di nuova minaccia il gruppo tornerà unito, dato che la gente sa che gli eroi non sono un pericolo, ma validi difensori del mondo, al contrario di quello che il governo sostiene. In una scena durante i titoli di coda, The Other comunica all'Antico dell'Universo la disfatta dell'esercito, aggiungendo che attaccare la Terra equivarrebbe ad andare incontro alla morte. Il suo interlocutore, Thanos, sorride diabolicamente.

In the film, Nick Fury, director of the peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D., recruits Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to form a team that must stop Thor's brother Lokifrom subjugating Earth. The film's development began when Marvel Studios received a loan from Merrill Lynch in April 2005. After the success of the film Iron Man in May 2008, Marvel announced that The Avengers would be released in July 2011. With the signing of Johansson in March 2009, the film was pushed back for a 2012 release. Whedon was brought on board in April 2010 and rewrote the original screenplay by Zak Penn. Production began in April 2011 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before moving to Cleveland, Ohio, in August and New York City in September. The film was converted to 3D in post-production. The Avengers premiered on April 11, 2012, at Hollywood's El Capitan Theatre and was released theatrically in the United States on May 4, 2012. The film garnered numerous critical awards and nominations, includingAcademy Award and BAFTA nominations for achievements in visual effects and has set or tied numerous box office records, including the biggest opening weekend in North America and the fastest film to gross $1 billion. The Avengers grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide, and became the third-highest-grossing film—as well as the first Marvel production to generate $1 billion in ticket sales. The film was released on Blu-ray Discand DVD on September 25, 2012. A sequel, titled Avengers: Age of Ultron, is scheduled for release on May 1, 2015, while third and fourth sequels, titled Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Avengers: Infinity War Part 2, are scheduled to be released on May 4, 2018 and May 8, 2019, respectively. The Asgardian Loki encounters the Other, the leader of an extraterrestrial race known as the Chitauri. In exchange for retrieving the Tesseract,2 a powerful energy source of unknown potential, the Other promises Loki an army with which he can subjugate Earth. Nick Fury, director of the espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D., and his lieutenant Agent Maria Hill arrive at a remote research facility during an evacuation, where physicist Dr. Erik Selvig is leading a research team experimenting on the Tesseract. Agent Phil Coulson explains that the object has begun radiating an unusual form of energy. The Tesseract suddenly activates and opens a wormhole, allowing Loki to reach Earth. Loki takes the Tesseract and uses his scepter to enslave Selvig and several agents, including Clint Barton, to aid him in his getaway. In response to the attack, Fury reactivates the "Avengers Initiative". Agent Natasha Romanoff is sent to Calcutta to recruit Dr. Bruce Banner to trace the Tesseract through its gamma radiation emissions. Coulson visitsTony Stark to have him review Selvig's research, and Fury approaches Steve Rogers with an assignment to retrieve the Tesseract. In Stuttgart, Barton steals iridium needed to stabilize the Tesseract's power while Loki causes a distraction, leading to a confrontation with Rogers, Stark, and Romanoff that ends with Loki's surrender. While Loki is being escorted to S.H.I.E.L.D., Thor, his adoptive brother, arrives and frees him, hoping to convince him to abandon his plan and return to Asgard. After a confrontation with Stark and Rogers, Thor agrees to take Loki to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s flying aircraft carrier, the Helicarrier. There Loki is imprisoned while Banner and Stark attempt to locate the Tesseract. The Avengers become divided, both over how to approach Loki and the revelation that S.H.I.E.L.D. plans to harness the Tesseract to develop weapons as a deterrent against hostile extraterrestrials. As the group argues, Barton and Loki's other possessed agents attack the Helicarrier, disabling its engines in flight and causing Banner to transform into the Hulk. Stark and Rogers try to restart the damaged engine, and Thor attempts to stop the Hulk's rampage. Romanoff fights Barton, and knocks him unconscious, breaking Loki's mind control. Loki escapes after killing Coulson and ejecting Thor from the airship, while the Hulk falls to the ground after attacking a S.H.I.E.L.D. fighter jet. Fury uses Coulson's death to motivate the Avengers into working as a team. Stark and Rogers realize that for Loki, simply defeating them will not be enough; he needs to overpower them publicly to validate himself as ruler of Earth. Loki uses the Tesseract, in conjunction with a device Selvig built, to open a wormhole above Stark Tower to the Chitauri fleet in space, launching his invasion. The Avengers rally in defense of New York City, the wormhole's location, but quickly realize they will be overwhelmed as wave after wave of Chitauri descend upon Earth. Banner arrives and transforms into the Hulk, and together he, Rogers, Stark, Thor, Barton, and Romanoff battle the Chitauri while evacuating civilians. The Hulk finds Loki and beats him into submission. Romanoff makes her way to the wormhole generator, where Selvig, freed of Loki's control, reveals that Loki's scepter can be used to shut down the generator. Meanwhile, Fury's superiors attempt to end the invasion by launching a nuclear missile at Manhattan. Stark intercepts the missile and takes it through the wormhole toward the Chitauri fleet. The missile detonates, destroying the Chitauri mothership and disabling their forces on Earth. Stark's suit runs out of power, and he falls back through the wormhole just as Romanoff closes it. Stark goes into freefall, but the Hulk saves him from crashing to the ground. In the aftermath, Thor returns Loki and the Tesseract to Asgard, while Fury expresses confidence that the Avengers will return if and when they are needed. In a mid-credits scene, the Other confers with his master3 about the failed attack on Earth. In a post-credits scene, the Avengers eat in silence at a shawarma restaurant.
