Departure: Steven Tyler has confirmed he is quitting American Idol
Steven Tyler has confirmed he is leaving American Idol.
The Aerosmith singer has been a judge for the past two series on the talent show – alongside Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson.
But he has ruled out returning for the 12th season in order to concentrate on music again after he 'strayed too far' from his band.
His decisions comes after Lopez admitted today she is not sure if she will return for a 12th season.
True to his idiosyncratic character, Tyler wrote in his statement: 'After some long ... hard ... thoughts ... I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit,' TMZ reports.
The 64-year-old was making reference to a scene from the film Fatal Attraction - in which a deranged woman kills her lover's daughter's pet rabbit.
He went on: 'I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I'm back – but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I've got two fists in the air and I'm kicking the door open with my band.'
Moving on: Tyler's decision comes as fellow judge Jennifer Lopez admitted today she may not return to the Fox show, seen right third judge Randy Jackson
Steven admits he 'loved every minute' of his time on American Idol after having 'over-the-top fun', but he is now committed to 'bringing rock back' with the I Don't Want to Miss a Thing hitmakers.

'On Nov. 6, we are unleashing our new album, 'Music from Another Dimension' on the Earth, Moon, Mars, and way beyond the stars.
'Idol was over-the-top fun, and I loved every minute of it…Now it's time to bring rock back.'
Walk This Way: Tyler sat behind the panel during the season 11 grand finale with host Ryan Seacrest, behind
Mike Darnell, Fox's president of alternative entertainment, said in a statement: 'It’s been a tremendous honour to have Steven – one of the most prolific artists in the world – on 'American Idol' for the past two seasons.
'He’s been a terrific judge, a true friend and great mentor to everyone involved with the show, and we know he’ll continue to be a huge inspiration to 'Idol' hopefuls for years to come.
Quitting too? J-Lo said she is unlikely to return to Idol during an interview on the Today show this morning
'We are very sad that Steven has chosen to focus more on his music, but we always knew when we hired a rock ’n’ roll legend, he would go back to the music.
'We all wish him all the best and would love to have him back on the show anytime.'
American Idol co-creator and executive producer Simon Fuller added: 'I completely understand his desire to get back to his life as the singer in America's greatest-ever rock band.'
J-Lo appeared on the Today Show this morning, she said she was unlikely to return for a third season.
The 42-year-old mother-of-two mused: 'Maybe it's time for me to go. It's been on my mind a lot, as you can imagine, and now it's like, "Do we continue on this journey?"
'I've loved it so much. I enjoy the show so much... It's a tough decision either way.'
The Jenny From The Block singer stressed that whichever route she takes, will not be an easy one.
She added: 'At the end of the day, whichever way, it's a heartbreaking decision if I'm going to have to go.'
This means the fate of final judge Randy Jackson will no doubt hang in the balance, as rumours are rife that he may no longer be a judge, with global superstar Mariah Carey in 'serious talks' to sign.
